Their tools and reports are used to help online marketers improve SEO, PPC, SMM, keyword research, competition research, public relations, content marketing, marketing insights, and campaign management. SEMrush has helped more than 6 million marketers do their job more effectively while achieving better results. The company started with only two different toolsets for customers to utilize. Since then, that number has grown to over 40, including a listing management tool, agency growth kit, website audit tool, and several others. The large collection of marketing tools that SEMrush offers can help any business optimize their visibility across key channels while creating engaging content for their users.
SEMrush domain authority score is a compound metric used for measuring a domain or webpage’s overall quality and SEO performance. The score is based on several different metrics which represent trustworthiness and authority. It utilizes a neural network and machine learning to ensure the score is always accurate and fresh. Authority scores indicate a domain’s SEO quality and a higher number means a stronger domain. But keep in mind, Authority Score can measure a domain and page, but cannot measure a subfolder or subdomain’s authority at this time. If you are researching a subfolder or subdomain, this module will show the authority score of the root domain. All authority scores calculated are relative to the scores of the domains within the same range of authority score. Simply put, this means any improvements by close competitors can lower your score even if nothing on your site changes.
Domainers use the SEMrush Domain Authority score to determine if an expired domain currently has traffic or backlinks, and whether it might be spam or not. Generally speaking, the higher the Authority Score of a domain, the more trusted it is. It’s based on a scale ranging from 1 to 100, so the closer the Authority Score is too 100, the better.
How Is It Calculated
The SEMrush Domain Authority Score is a result of calculations run by a neural network algorithm which uses machine learning to measure every domains authority based on quality, popularity, and backlink signals. The calculation is carried out in two steps:
1) Their initial machine learning algorithm uses organic search data, website traffic data, and backlink data to understand the rankings of the most popular and trusted domain names on the web.
2) The second algorithm uses backlink data to detect how a website increases or decreases its authority by gaining links. The metrics in this calculation include: the number of referring domains, the authority of each referring domain, follow vs. nofollow links pointing to the domain, follow vs nofollow links pointing away from the domain, the total number of backlinks, the total number of referring IP addresses, and more.
The domain score value is measured on a scale from 0 to 100, with 100 being the strongest. The final score is measured in relation to the most authoritative domains. Keep in mind, there are only a few domains on the Internet with the scores above 95.
The purpose of an SEMrush Domain Authority Score is to serve as an indicator of the overall quality of a specific domain or website. For domain investors, this can give them more insight about an expired domain and how it was used in the past. A good Domain Authority Score (one that is similar to websites within the same or neighboring niches) will mean the domain likely good-quality and has existing traffic and backlinks. Ideally, you want to have the highest Domain Authority score out of your competitors, but you don’t want it to be so high that you’re out of competition with them. If all of your direct competitors have scored between 40 and 50, a good domain authority score for your website should fall between 55 and 60.
Businesses can also use the SEMrush authority score for domain comparison. When doing so, they should judge a domain names Authority Score in relation to similar websites in the same or neighboring niches. The more comparable a particular domains score is with others similar to it, the better. Remember, when looking at the authority score of an expired domain you shouldn’t only be looking for domains with the highest scores, but instead looking for domains with scores that are similar to others in its niche.
It’s extremely common to use SEMrush as a filter for SEO or traffic domains. If a domain was previously developed and has existing traffic coming into it which isn’t from type-ins, it is expected to have a domain authority score, even if it’s only in the 10-20 range. Domains which are not developed and receive mostly just type-in traffic (such as dictionary word domains that are not developed) will likely not be scored unless they have links pointing into them from around the web.

SEMrush distinguishes between three different types of requests made via the API: lines, calls, and keywords. The cost of requests is measured in units. Units are determined by the type of report or request. Delivering historical data requires more units than live data. One dollar is equal to approximately 20,000 API units and performing one SEMrush domain request is 10 API units per line.
It’s recommended that you calculate your API request limit before purchasing any API package. You can increase your request limit by upgrading your subscription or by purchasing API units at anytime.
The wide variety of tools that SEMrush offers makes them a top choice for both businesses and individuals because they can perform so many different tasks in just one place. Domain Authority scores are determined using a neural network and machine learning which makes it almost impossible to manipulate. It can’t be faked with bots and no toolbars are used to gather data. If you try to cheat the system with spammy backlinks the SEMrush algorithm will notice it and your score will drop. Good backlinks and search engine traffic can’t be faked, so if a domain owns a high Domain Authority score than it’s likely a good-quality domain and not spam.

Guru accounts start at $199.95 per month and are ideal for small businesses and growing marketing agencies. Business accounts are top-tier at SEMrush. They start at $399.95 per month and are catered towards larger agencies, E-commerce projects and businesses with extensive web presence. Only Pro and Guru accounts have free 30-day trial periods available (with limitations), and only Business accounts will have API access.
There are several other companies which use their own algorithms to come up with scores similar to the SEMrush Domain Authority. These would include Majestic Trust Flow & Citation Flow, MOZ Domain & Page authority, and Ahrefs Domain & URL rating.
