It’s one thing to choose a great domain but is it within your budget? See how our EAP metric simplifies domain budgeting by predicting domain prices.

Our Estimated Auction Price (EAP) metric is the first of its kind that predicts how much a domain will be sold for at auction. Using the EAP, you can find the most valuable domains on sale in one click!

Domain names are valued differently, and there are several factors that affect the price of a domain. If you’ve had your eyes on a domain name for a while and are wondering how much you should budget to acquire it, our EAP helps you do just that.

In the rest of this piece, we’ll discuss the different factors affecting domain price and how our EAP blends them all into a single comprehensive price so you can budget right.

Factors affecting domain price

What are some of the factors that determine a domain’s value and consequently, price?

Length

First is the length of the domain. The shorter a domain name is, the more valuable it is. Shorter domain names are easier to remember and are more brandable.

As an extension of length, domains with fewer syllables are also typically more valuable as they are easier to pronounce and pass the radio test more easily. The competition for short domain names with 0-7 letters is fierce and thus, they are priced higher than lengthier domain names.

Keywords in name

Keyword-rich domain names are also typically more expensive than those with fewer keywords. It’s easy to see why. Domain names with keywords are very easy to understand and a potential website visitor knows exactly what your business is about, right away.

While brandable domain names (those without any keywords) are also valuable, marketing a keyword-rich domain is much easier and less time-consuming.

A domain that’s already generating organic searches can give any brand a headstart and put them several months’ worth of work ahead to rank in search.

Link profile

Domains with healthy link profiles i.e. with backlinks from high authority domains are very valuable. The link profile is one of the metrics search engines like Google consider.

Search engine algorithms perceive a domain with a good link profile as more popular and credible than another with inferior or bad-quality links

Age

Domain age is another factor that can affect its value, more so for potential buyers. While domain age doesn’t necessarily guarantee better ranking, it can be a signal for credibility and a domain that’s been around for a while and not attracted any penalties is more valuable.

Traffic

Any domain that’s currently generating a decent amount of traffic will be gold! Buying a domain that’s currently generating traffic, especially if it’s still linked to a website, can save you months of content marketing just to start appearing in search.

These will usually be the most expensive domains and you can expect to pay a premium for them.

History

If you are considering a domain name that’s been used before and is still being searched for, you can expect a high price tag on it. Search engines are extremely competitive and creating content to eventually get you to the top ranking positions takes time and a lot of commitment.

As an overarching factor, a domain’s history covers its traffic, its standing with search engines (whether it’s ever been penalized), how frequently it has changed owners, the quality of links that have pointed to it over time, etc.

Domains with good histories of being in good standing with search engines and previous high searchability will be incredibly valuable and more expensive.

Extension or TLD

And finally, the domain extension or Top Level Domain (TLD) also determines the price. The domain extension or TLD is the suffix after the dot(.). The most popular TLDs include .com, .net. .org, .io, etc.

.com domains are the most valuable and are pricier than other extensions. By default, users type the .com whenever they are searching for a website online, so a website with the .com TLD with gain massive traffic if it is marketed right.

Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) are also generally pricier for businesses in a particular country or region.

Our EAP combines them all into one simple metric

So now that you know some factors to consider that affect domain price, is there a way to get a measure of a domain’s value from all these important considerations at once? Our Estimated Auction Price (EAP) is the first-of-its-kind price prediction metric to give you just that!
